About

we are a community seeking more than the mere ritual of a Sunday church service
we want to grow in our experience of the divine in daily life
we want to support each other in living to our fullest and blessing all of our neighbors

What we practice and believe

  • we believe God is still speaking through our lives and the world we live in

  • we cultivate contemplative practices to notice the Spirit’s activity in our life and to encourage each other in cultivating this awareness

  • we celebrate theological progress and the ancient paths and seek to learn from both

  • we are theologically diverse and prioritize life and relationship over dogma

  • we believe the natural world is one of our greatest teachers and friends

  • we are followers of the Jesus way and we benefit richly from truths found in other traditions

  • we believe that all truth ultimately finds its deepest value and meaning in Christ - the one who holds all things together (Col. 1:17).

  • we study the story of scripture deeply to know our spiritual origins and to illumine the complexities of the world we live in

  • we seek to grow in mind, body and spirit so that we can be a blessing to our community and to all of our neighbors

  • we welcome everyone to fully participate in our community regardless of social status, sexual orientation, or political affiliation.

Who is Grace / SF?

The community who will form Grace/SF is being gathered by Jonathan Gundlach, an ordained minister and attorney with 13 years experience ministering in San Francisco.

After 13 years of ministering with and eventually co-leading City Church SF, Jonathan began asking difficult questions around:

• why are so many people finding church to be unnecessary or irrelevant to their daily lives?

• why has the political polarization that has so deeply infected America also infected our church experience?

• why has “church” seemed to become about everything except deep personal spiritual awakening and growth?

While Jonathan’s professional ministry experience has been in the Presbyterian and Reformed traditions, he has been deeply impacted by charismatic and mystical traditions as well as by the deep wisdom of the Celtic Christian tradition. The hope is that a unique combination of these traditions (and others!) may emerge in this new community.

Jonathan’s ordination is held by the Reformed Church in America, a small and diverse denomination that has been operating in America since the early 1600s and which has its roots in continental Europe. Grace/SF is a church plant within the City Classis of the Reformed Church - a unique collection of city-based churches seeking to creatively connect with their communities.

Jonathan and his wife Kristen (a nurse and artist) moved to SF in 2009 and have raised three children (Noah, Rowan and Matylda) in this complex and amazing City. They intend to make San Francisco their long-term home.
